The majority of Chesterfield sofas (not all) are upholstered with “Antique Leather”, a rub-off leather which has been partially treated and sealed, ensuring it remains family friendly. When the hides are initially removed, the hides are very thick; there is enough leather to split the skin into 2 pieces. The top piece becomes the “antique leather” which is used on chesterfield leather sofas; the underside forms the split, which some budget manufacturers use on sofas and furniture, but often it is used in contract upholstery, as the split leather is thicker, with a heavily imprinted grain. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two leathers is simply by touching them. Antique leather will be very smooth, and you will see small grain impressions, whereas split leather has a heavily embossed grain, and it’s a little crunchy to touch.

After you have identified the type of covering your chesterfield leather sofa has, you need to understand a just little more about the type of leather, so you can then purchase suitable leather care products. Antique leather, or rub off leather, is top-grain corrected leather. Top-grain corrected, means the very outer surface (the bit you touch) has been altered, and partially sealed, making it waterproof. This makes the leather very resilient, and family friendly. Sticky fingers and spillages are easily mopped up, tea, coffee and whatever else you decide to spill, will not permeate through the leather, it will roll off. “Rub off” means the leather has 2 types of dye, a base coat, and a top coat, which is usually a much darker colour. When your chesterfield is upholstered, a special chemical is used to rub-off the top, darker colour, revealing a beautiful two-tone effect. This makes antique leather ideal leather for everyday use. It looks beautiful, and is soft to the touch, and even better still, it is very low maintenance.  I might get into trouble for telling you this, and I would probably lose my job if I were working at large high-street store, but this leather can be cared for, for free. Use a simple, damp cloth without detergent, when you spill anything on it. It will quickly mop up the spillage, and will clean the surface. As I mentioned earlier, this type of leather is partially sealed, and very tiny (if any) amounts of the contaminant will make it through the leather into the foams. The damp cloth method will also protect the finish your chesterfield leather sofa has. Some chemical cleaning agents not only attack the contaminant, they also attack the lacquers and colours which create the two-tone “authentic chesterfield” effect, and strip the leather of its top coat of dye, far too quickly. With antique leather, it really is a case of “less is more”, the less you do, the longer your chesterfield will last.

And if you have some cat scratching, or some cracking (a lighter colour forming in the creases on the cushions for example), try Grison Leather Restoration, a pigment wax which will dye and feed the exposed leather, quickly disguising the unsightly blemish. The first thing you need to do is look at the store or website you are purchasing from. As an example, take a store in London, selling Chesterfield Furniture. In 95% of the cases, the store is simply buying in the sofas to sell, to turn a profit, and that’s fair enough. But that store, also has a huge lease to cover, with crippling business rates etc. So why should you pay up to 5 times of the “actual price” of the sofa, just to buy it in London? Unless you have money to burn, it simply doesn’t make sense.

Another good thing to look for is knowledge. How much does the company or salesman know about the Chesterfield they are selling? Do they seem pushy; are they just after the sale? Chesterfields sell themselves. A good quality Chesterfield will sell itself to you, you will know when you see it, it will almost speak to you. And when it does, here is what it will say:
